2001 Sludge combustion in a fluidised bed

In 2001 THERMAX Engineering supplied a fluidised bed combustion unit to brickworks in Port Elizabeth / South Africa. The unit was initially designed to burn sun dried sludge, which had been deposited on open fields over some years. The heat generated is used to dry the raw bricks in the factory.

Following the combustion of the stored, dried sludge, the unit is now used to burn mechanically dewatered sludge mixed with local coal and wood chips.

The plant has a thermal capacity of 9 MW and is in continuous operation since 2009
